EMDR Therapist in Chelmsford
When You've Tried to Push Through It Alone
Some things don’t shift just because you understand them intellectually. EMDR works on the parts of a problem that logic alone can’t reach. I work with clients based in Chelmsford and throughout Essex, in person or online.

EMDR Therapy for Clients in Chelmsford
By the time most people get in touch, they’ve already tried to reason their way out of it. Reading, thinking it through, talking to a partner. None of that is wasted exactly; it just doesn’t always finish the job on its own.
I see clients from Chelmsford and the surrounding Essex area for exactly that kind of stuck, in person or online.
The Method Behind EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing),is NICE-recommended for PTSD, and I also draw on it for anxiety and depression where something specific, rather than a general thinking pattern, is driving things.
My approach is fairly direct. We pin down what’s actually causing the reaction, then use bilateral stimulation, typically structured eye movements, to help reprocess it properly. It isn’t an open-ended conversation that goes wherever it goes. There’s a structure to it, an evidence base behind it, and a different mechanism to standard talking therapy.
Is EMDR Right for You?
The people I see for EMDR in Chelmsford are rarely in crisis. More often they’re managing demanding professional lives while something underneath keeps catching them out: anxiety that spikes without an obvious trigger, low mood that doesn’t match the facts of their life on paper, or the after-effects of something specific that happened.
I use EMDR for anxiety, EMDR for depression, and EMDR for PTSD depending on what’s underneath, not just the label someone arrives with. A single defining incident isn’t a requirement either; plenty of what EMDR treats has built up over time rather than arriving all at once.
How We'd Work Together
Sessions run however suits you best, face-to-face in Chelmsford, at home, or online.
Online Therapy Sessions
A lot of EMDR happens just as effectively over video call. If travelling isn’t practical, online keeps things moving without losing anything.
Home Visit Therapy
I’m based in Essex and see clients from Chelmsford face to face, including home visits if that works better for you.
Not the Usual Path Into This Work
My route into private practice wasn’t the standard one. I trained as a mental health nurse and worked in secure settings, including Broadmoor, before moving into primary care and then CBT training. Most private therapists haven’t worked at that end of things, and it shapes how I think about risk, complexity, and what actually helps.
I still work part-time at the University of Cambridge alongside seeing clients privately. BABCP accreditation means my CBT training and ongoing practice are independently checked, not just self-declared, and EMDR training sits on top of that. Put together, it means the work is grounded in evidence rather than a general sense that talking helps. You leave with something usable, not an open-ended relationship with a therapist.
What Happens First in Therapy Sessions
Book a free discovery call
A short, no-obligation, 20-minute call to talk through what’s going on and whether EMDR’s the right fit.
Structured Sessions
Once we’ve agreed what we’re targeting, we work through it using EMDR, in person in Chelmsford or online.
Move Forward With What You've Learned
You leave with the reprocessing done and a clearer understanding of what was driving it, not an ongoing dependency on sessions.
In Clients' Own Words
Can’t recommend highly enough!!!
Ryan was an exceptional trauma-informed CBT therapist and I can’t recommend him highly enough. From the very first session, he immediately made me feel relaxed, safe, and comfortable enough to open up about what was going on. He explained things in a way that was easy to understand and always made the techniques feel relevant and personal to my situation.
My time working with Ryan was very helpful and productive. I’ve had several counsellors over the years, and elements of Ryan’s approach were quite different and very suited to me. His manner is relaxed and empathetic. Whilst the time was taken to aid my understanding of myself, he also provided real tools and tactics that enabled me to put the changes I wanted to make into practice. This has often been the gap in the past that prevented me from making meaningful change. I’m doing well now, but wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Ryan, for a top up, or to work through another issue on the future. Thank you, Ryan.
Life Changing.
Ryan has been incredible throughout. His pragmatic approach and tools have helped me overcome a number of challenges which have built up over time.
His clear communication style and clarity ensured I was able to understand everything in the first instance and the awareness I developed with his help has significantly improved my view on many things and helped me be more accepting in certain situations which would have previously snow balled and got out of control.
Without question or doubt, I’d highly recommend Ryan. Thank you Ryan.
I couldn’t recommend Ryan more.
Ryan is a highly trained therapist, who you feel at ease with after just your first meeting. He speaks to you like you’re a real person and creates an environment that you feel that you can open up in. Ryan has real life applicable techniques which are easy to integrate into your day to day life. He genuinely has changed my life and way of thinking.
I have tried NHS and a few other therapy services. Slan Therapy was the one that stuck. Ryan is patient and lets you go at your own pace whilst also making sure you are progressing. He made me feel so at ease and I looked forward to the sessions instead of dreading them (like all the ones before). My life is now brighter since working with him. 100% recommend, his Irish self won’t let you down!
Ryan is a phenomenal practitioner of pyschotherapy and CBT. I started working with him on a personal recommendation and within a few sessions he had helped me not only understand (for the first time) what was going on for me, but also started equipping me with practical work that made a real difference.
