EMDR Therapist in Brentwood

A Structured Way Through What's Stuck

Something’s still stuck, no matter how much you’ve thought it through. EMDR gives your brain a structured way to actually process it, not just manage it. I work with clients in Brentwood and across Essex, in person or online.

EMDR Therapy for Clients in Brentwood

You’ve probably got a lot of your life sorted. Good job, a family, a house you worked hard for. But something’s stuck. Maybe it’s a specific event you can point to; maybe it’s not that clear-cut. Either way, if it keeps intruding on your day, keeps you on edge, or keeps you replaying the same moment, that’s not something you have to just manage indefinitely.

I work with clients across Brentwood and the wider Essex area, in person and online, so you don’t need to travel into London for specialist trauma therapy.

What EMDR Actually Involves

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is recommended by NICE for PTSD, and I also use it for anxiety and depression where the underlying issue is unprocessed experience rather than a thinking pattern alone.

I tend to work quite concretely. We identify what’s actually driving the reaction, work through it using structured eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, and reprocess it so it stops firing the same way. It’s not about talking around a problem for months. It’s a method; it has an evidence base, and it works differently to standard talking therapy for this kind of thing.

Who EMDR Therapy in Brentwood Is For

Most of the people I see for EMDR in Brentwood aren’t in crisis. They’re functioning, often high-achieving professionals, and dealing with something specific that keeps resurfacing: a difficult event, a period of sustained pressure, or symptoms that don’t fully make sense given how “fine” everything else looks on paper. I use EMDR for anxiety, EMDR for PTSD, and EMDR for depression, depending on what’s actually driving the reaction rather than treating the label on its own.

You don’t need a single dramatic incident for EMDR to be the right fit. Accumulated stress counts too.

Sessions That Fit Around You

Sessions run however suits you best, face-to-face in Brentwood, at home, or online.

Online Therapy Sessions

EMDR works just as well delivered remotely. If travel doesn’t suit you, or you’re outside Brentwood altogether, online sessions cover exactly the same ground.

A Different Route Into Private Practice

Ryan Hegarty, private CBT and EMDR therapist in Essex, seated on a wooden bench in a professional portrait

Before CBT and EMDR training, I worked as a mental health nurse, including at Broadmoor Hospital and other medium-secure settings, before moving into primary care. That’s a different starting point to most private therapists, and it means I’ve worked across a genuinely wide range of severity before choosing to specialise in this.

I still work part-time as a Mental Health Adviser at the University of Cambridge alongside private practice. I’m BABCP-accredited, which means my CBT training and practice are independently vetted, and I’m a trained EMDR practitioner on top of that.

What that adds up to: an evidence-based approach, not a generic “let’s see how you feel about that” model. You leave with a way of understanding what happened and tools to use afterwards, not an ongoing dependency on sessions.

What Clients Say

Can’t recommend highly enough!!! Ryan was an exceptional trauma-informed CBT therapist and I can’t recommend him highly enough. From the very first session, he immediately made me feel relaxed, safe, and comfortable enough to open up about what was going on. He explained things in a way that was easy to understand and always made the techniques feel relevant and personal to my situation. Ryan encouraged me to really commit to the CBT work and challenged me in a supportive and constructive way. Because of that, I saw amazing results. The impact his therapy has had on my life has genuinely been life changing, and I’m incredibly grateful for his support and guidance.

I couldn’t recommend Ryan more. Ryan is a highly trained therapist, who you feel at ease with after just your first meeting. He speaks to you like you’re a real person and creates an environment that you feel that you can open up in. Ryan has real life applicable techniques which are easy to integrate into your day to day life. He genuinely has changed my life and way of thinking.

My time working with Ryan was very helpful and productive. I’ve had several counsellors over the years, and elements of Ryan’s approach were quite different and very suited to me. His manner is relaxed and empathetic. Whilst the time was taken to aid my understanding of myself, he also provided real tools and tactics that enabled me to put the changes I wanted to make into practice. This has often been the gap in the past that prevented me from making meaningful change. I’m doing well now, but wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Ryan, for a top up, or to work through another issue on the future. Thank you, Ryan.

I have tried NHS and a few other therapy services. Slan Therapy was the one that stuck. Ryan is patient and lets you go at your own pace whilst also making sure you are progressing. He made me feel so at ease and I looked forward to the sessions instead of dreading them (like all the ones before). My life is now brighter since working with him. 100% recommend, his Irish self won’t let you down!

Ryan is an amazing person. When I was at the lowest of lows, he picked me up and saved me from the hurricane. His calm and non judgemental nature put me at ease and I will forever be indebted to him. Thank you, Ryan!
