CBT Therapist in Chelmsford
When Willpower Alone Isn't Cutting It
Plenty of people try to think their way out of anxiety or stress before they ever consider therapy. Sometimes that’s enough. When it isn’t, CBT gives you an actual method rather than more willpower. I work with clients in Chelmsford and across Essex, in person or online.

CBT Support for People in Chelmsford
Chelmsford’s a commuter town, and a lot of what I see reflects that: work stress that doesn’t switch off, evenings spent still half in work mode, weekends that don’t feel like a proper break. CBT won’t change your job, but it changes how much of that follows you around.
I work with clients across Chelmsford and the wider Essex area, in person or online.
What CBT Involves in Practice
NICE recommends CBT for depression and for anxiety disorders, and in practice I use the same structured approach for stress, burnout, sleep problems, and low self-esteem, wherever the issue is more about patterns of thinking and behaviour than something needing reprocessing.
Rather than an open conversation that goes wherever it goes, we work out specifically what’s maintaining the problem and target that directly. It’s structured, it has an endpoint, and it’s grounded in evidence rather than general reassurance.
Who Benefits From CBT Therapy in Chelmsford
A fair number of people I see in Chelmsford are doing fine by most measures, work’s going okay, professional life ticking along, and there’s still something that doesn’t sit right. Persistent anxiety, low mood that doesn’t track with anything specific, sleep that’s stopped cooperating, or a running undercurrent of not feeling good enough.
None of that needs a crisis attached to justify getting help.
How Sessions Actually Run
Sessions run however suits you best, face-to-face in Chelmsford, at home, or online.
Online Therapy Sessions
Online sessions cover exactly the same ground, useful if getting to an appointment is the bigger obstacle.
Home Visit Therapy
I see clients face-to-face in Chelmsford if that works better
A Different Kind of Training Ground as a CBT Therapist
Before any of the CBT training or accreditation, I spent years working as a mental health nurse in secure settings, Broadmoor among them, then in primary care. It’s not the background most private therapists have, and it means severity doesn’t rattle me the way it might someone who’s only worked in outpatient settings.
CBT training came after that, along with BABCP accreditation, which means the training and ongoing practice are independently checked rather than self-certified. I still work part-time at the University of Cambridge too. None of that matters as much as whether the approach works for you, but it’s worth knowing it isn’t guesswork.

What Clients Say About CBT Therapy
Can’t recommend highly enough!!!
Ryan was an exceptional trauma-informed CBT therapist and I can’t recommend him highly enough. From the very first session, he immediately made me feel relaxed, safe, and comfortable enough to open up about what was going on. He explained things in a way that was easy to understand and always made the techniques feel relevant and personal to my situation.
My time working with Ryan was very helpful and productive. I’ve had several counsellors over the years, and elements of Ryan’s approach were quite different and very suited to me. His manner is relaxed and empathetic. Whilst the time was taken to aid my understanding of myself, he also provided real tools and tactics that enabled me to put the changes I wanted to make into practice. This has often been the gap in the past that prevented me from making meaningful change. I’m doing well now, but wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Ryan, for a top up, or to work through another issue on the future. Thank you, Ryan.
Life Changing.
Ryan has been incredible throughout. His pragmatic approach and tools have helped me overcome a number of challenges which have built up over time.
His clear communication style and clarity ensured I was able to understand everything in the first instance and the awareness I developed with his help has significantly improved my view on many things and helped me be more accepting in certain situations which would have previously snow balled and got out of control.
Without question or doubt, I’d highly recommend Ryan. Thank you Ryan.
I couldn’t recommend Ryan more.
Ryan is a highly trained therapist, who you feel at ease with after just your first meeting. He speaks to you like you’re a real person and creates an environment that you feel that you can open up in. Ryan has real life applicable techniques which are easy to integrate into your day to day life. He genuinely has changed my life and way of thinking.
I have tried NHS and a few other therapy services. Slan Therapy was the one that stuck. Ryan is patient and lets you go at your own pace whilst also making sure you are progressing. He made me feel so at ease and I looked forward to the sessions instead of dreading them (like all the ones before). My life is now brighter since working with him. 100% recommend, his Irish self won’t let you down!
Ryan is a phenomenal practitioner of pyschotherapy and CBT. I started working with him on a personal recommendation and within a few sessions he had helped me not only understand (for the first time) what was going on for me, but also started equipping me with practical work that made a real difference.

CBT Questions From Chelmsford Clients
Don’t see the answer you need? Get in touch.
What's the cost of CBT therapy in Chelmsford?
A CBT therapy session is £99 for 50 minutes, but pricing depends on the format and type of session: at home or online. The full pricing breakdown covers all of that.
Is CBT only for anxiety and depression?
No. I also use it for stress, burnout, sleep problems and low self-esteem, wherever the underlying pattern fits.
Do I need a referral to start CBT with you?
No. This is private practice, so you can book directly without going through a GP first.
What's the actual difference between CBT and just talking to someone?
CBT follows a structure aimed at identifying and changing what’s maintaining the problem, usually with things to try between sessions. It’s more targeted than an open-ended conversation.
